Wrist Tendon Injury

A wrist tendon injury is an injury to the muscles and tendons in the wrist. Tendons are bands of strong tissue that attach muscle to bone. Wrist tendon strains can be caused by overuse of the tendon from a sport or work activity that involves moving the wrist, such as throwing, catching, bowling, hitting a tennis ball, typing, or sewing, or sudden activities that twist or tear the tendon, such as falling and landing on the wrist.

Tendons can be injured suddenly or they may be slowly damaged over time which results in tiny or partial tears in the tendon. A complete tear of the tendon is called a rupture whereas other tendon injuries may be called a strain, tendinosis, or tendinitis. Some of the symptoms that may be experienced include pain in the wrist and forearm with repeated activity, tenderness when the area is touched, or swelling around the wrist.

Physical therapy is also helpful for wrist tendon injury. Your therapist will create a customised treatment plan that includes stretching and strengthening exercises to help with recovery. Cryotherapy will also be used to help reduce inflammation and pain in the area. A splint or tape that keeps the wrist or thumb from moving may help. The pain often gets better within a few weeks but some may take longer to heal. If in doubt, seek professional advice.
